Confused as to which card is best for the system build? Building a media PC but unsure of which card best suits the purpose? BS have created a basic guide to ATI graphics cards.
ATI use a card naming system. To determine which card is best we need to understand how the system works. We know that the cards are named in series such as HD5780, but what does this mean? Below is an explanation and breakdown of the card naming system.
* Denotes a wildcard
| Generation | Series | Market | Performance |
|---|
| * | 9 | Enthusiast/High End | ** |
| * | 8 | ** |
| * | 7 | Mainstream | ** |
| * | 6 | ** |
| * | 5 | ** |
| * | 4 | Value Entry Level | ** |
| * | 3 | ** |
| * | 2 | ** |
| * | 1 | ** |
The first number is the generation number (example 5000) this refers to the chipset used by the video card.
The next number is the series quality or market designation. (example 5800) this would refer to a 5000 chipset for the enthusiast market. These are also broken down further.
0400 - 0600 are video cards designed for media and home theatre use.
0700 are video cards designed for low intensity video games or higher intensity games run on lower graphical settings
0800 are video cards designed for high end graphically intensive games.
0900 is a special denotation relating to a dual chip or internal ATI crossfire
The third digit is the relative quality, within a series- a 5850 is less powerful than a 5870. Typically, a card of a higher series will always have more processing power than a card in a lower series, even if the relative quality is better (a 5770 will be outperformed by a 5850).
